Asking the Right Questions: A Core Duty of All Librarians

A former boss once told me that asking the right questions is often more important than supplying quick answers. I think that is the core duty of all librarians--to ask the right questions so that our patrons find their way to the most appropriate answers for themselves. I think this is the context that insures effective and efficient use of our information infrastructures--from Google searches to proprietary databases to old fashioned printed books and journals. Along with a gender and ethnic diversity, our ability to ask the right questions may be the key to our own professional survival in the twenty-first century and beyond.
